History of the Hunters of Hunterston

There is currently a lot of work going on in the grounds of Hunterston Castle, not least in the Walled Garden.  It is a large undertaking bringing the garden back under control, but it will be worth it.

It is the aim of this section of the web site to track the progress of Angus and Ralston as they tear back the years and restore the garden, not to it’s former glory, but to a garden anybody would enjoy walking in.

The residents that live in the cottages near the walled garden will also be helping with the weeding etc.

I am hoping that during my visit in June it will be possible to get some photo’s of both Angus and Ralston hard at work. I am also aiming to get a photo of Mary Ross on the large new lawn mower, the kind you drive round as you cut the grass.

It is hoped that you will be able to share in the progress of the gardens through these pages, anybody who has pictures of the gardens in past years are invited to submit them to this section so we can all share them.

It is also hoped that it will be possible for those wishing to donate money to aid the walled garden will be able to do so. It is currently envisaged that either an individual or group of individuals will donate enough to purchase mature shrubs and trees. It is not thought practicle to accept very small donations as these become difficult to manage. More information will be posted here as the idea is formulated into a workable plan. To start the ball rolling I have donated the tree below in Remberance of my Brother David, the tree cost £185 (about $370), this gives you an idea of the kinds of costs being faced in restoring the gardens. The picture below is of the tree that I have donated, It is a Japanese Maple, it is about 7.5 feet tall out of the pot.

Using the Menu on the left you can access pictures of the Walled Garden for the following years, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2005.
