Stone Mountain Highland Games USA Reunion - Mt. Lake Virginia Grandfather Mountain Highland Games

  • October 1983 July 1984 July 1984

In October last year I attended Stone Mountain Highland Games in Atlanta with a view to having our Annual Gathering at this venue in future years.

I stayed with Brad and Andrea Hunter, in Roswell, just outside Atlanta, for the duration of the Games. On the Thursday night we attended the first event: the Military Band Tattoo at the Stone Mountain Park Coliseum. A colourful, and noisy event with 15 different bands playing. On the Saturday the Games was officially opened with the Duke of Atholl (Clan Murray) as the guest of honour. The weather was excellent, and the whole day a most exciting and enjoyable event.

This year Clan Hunter will have the first USA gathering at the Games and we hope you will be able to come along and meet the Clan Officer for the USA, and the Chan Administrator from Scotland.

1984:

The first weekend in July is the annual date for the Mountain Lake Reunion. Charles M. Hunter, our Clan Officer in the US, gathered his family together for the 27th Reunion at this spectacular location. The Mountain Lake Hotel is situated not far from Blacksburg, in the mountains of Virginia. Charles Hunter of Hunterston travelled over from Scotland to make his second visit to Mt. Lake as the guest of our Clan Officer.

On Sunday afternoon Charles left Mountain Lake to be driven by Charles and Patricia Hunter to Linville, North Carolina, for the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games the following weekend. An overnight stop was made to the Barter Theatre, calling in at the Iron Stone Mountain Pottery, Tennessee on Sunday Morning. Arriving in Linville, we drove to the top of Grandfather Mountain visiting the Bald Eagle Reserve, and the Hang-Gliding Centre.

The 29th Grandfather Games was officially opened on the following Saturday. The week before was occupied with meetings and preparations for this grand event. Clan Hunter had a tent at the Games for the first time, and Charles Hunter of Hunterston was a guest of the Games Committee. The Clan Society sponsored one of the Junior Dancing Competitions in the Games.
