Following the successful Fergus Games, the fourth annual meeting of the Clan Hunter (Canada) was held on August 13th 1989 and was attended by 33 members with John Hunter (Clan Officer, Canada) in the Chair. Once again 'The Gaels' provided musical entertainment and all present were pleased that John's wife Marion was able to be there, despite her recent surgery.
Of interest to all Clan members were discussions on how to increase membership. Given the failure of mail shots from Clan headquarters, a local telephone directory approach was thought to be possibly effective. Also, members agreed to contact those who signed the visitor's book at various gatherings where Clan Hunter was represented. It was agreed that the advertisements in the 'Highlander' and 'Scottish Banner' should reach those Hunters who were already interested" in things Scottish, and therefore other ideas were necessary. Advertising in tartan shops was not recommended, as the Clan tartan is not available through these outlets. It was agreed that continued efforts must be made to increase the overall Clan membership.
Discussion also covered the subject of subscriptions, and the general concensus of the meeting was that an annual subscription should be made to cover the cost of the Newsletter and general mailing. The exact level would be determined, and this is mentioned elsewhere in the Newsletter.
Bob Hunter was honoured to represent Canada as 'Liberation Soldier of Holland'. He spent approximately a fortnight in Europe parading with other soldiers to celebrate 45 years since the liberation of Holland. He represented the Clan by wearing a Clan Hunter kilt.
We are sorry to have to record the untimely death of the wife of Paul Hunter, Shirley Jean Hunter, a "member of 'The Gaels'.
The Chief and his wife were made most welcome by the Canadian Clan members when they visited London, Ontario in October, and send thanks to John and Marion for producing the excellent Tartan Pins which they had made with their names on them.
